The photos below show details of an excellent 1935 Monopoly game in the small box with the single early patent 1,509,312.

~THE BOX~

The box is in excellent condition, the best in my collection. There are lots of photos detailing the remarkable condition of the box top and bottom. Also, this came with all the little cardboard platforms and dividers to keep the game pieces compartmentalized.

~THE BOARD~

The board is also in remarkable condition. It has the earlier color background, easily identified by the mottled appearance. The patent on both the inside and outside is the early 1,509,312 number.

Note that the JAIL square has the 1933 Darrow Copyright reference. I believe this was eliminated once the stock of Darrow game boards was used up. Cool!

~THE RULES~

There were 2 sets of rules with this game, not uncommon for this period. I think one set came with the box and the other with the board. Interesting that there are some significant differences in the wording and other details, present on each page, though most noticeable on the back pages. The photos below detail these differences.

Also included in the game was a small sheet with instructions for the 'NEW SHORT GAME'.

~PLAY MONEY~

This game exhibits Parker Brothers redesign of the money, adding some more game specific logos, the house and the train, plus mention of a 1935 patent and Parker Brothers as the makers.

~TITLE DEEDS~

Please note that the PARK PLACE, BOARDWALK, and BALTIC Title Deeds have extra large white text. MEDITERRANEAN has smaller size white text. Parker Brothers decided that the black text on the dark color title banners needed to be brightened up so they chose white for those deeds. This is probably their first experiment with the new color combo. The extra large text was quickly replaced with normal sized text. The large text deeds are very scarce.

Also, this is a blank back Title Deed set, produced before Parker Brothers decided to print the mortgage info and property name on the back. This is a transitional set of deeds, a very rare combination of large white text and blank backs. It wasn’t very long after these were introduced that they added the text on the back. Most of the large white text sets are found with text on the back. Neat!

AND, notice that the normally red properties, INDIANA, ILLINOIS, and KENTUCKY were printed with more of a purple-brown color. Cool!
