Parker Brothers
New Edition Monopoly Game
with Brown Box and Board, c. Early 1936

Parker Brothers bought the Monopoly game from the 'inventor', Charles Darrow, in 1935. Using the material Darrow had on hand, they immediately distributed about 5,900 games. Then they designed and started manufacturing their own games for market. The first batch numbered about 10,000 games. By the end of 1935, over 250,000 games had been sold.

It quickly became apparent to Parker Brothers that this game was a big hit so the marketing folks went to work to jazz up the game. The first new game they made was the diamond box design, named this by collectors because of the diamond with the $ in the middle of the label. Parker Brothers simply called it Game No 6.

The marketing must have worked because by the end of 1936, over 1.5 million games had been sold!

The initial production of this newly designed game had the banner 'New Edition' in script across the front. This was made in 2 styles, the first a brown box and board, and the second a black box and board. It is my belief that they found using the brown box and board too expensive or supplies were limited, so they switched from brown to black very early in this production run. Then, in early 1937, the 'New Edition' banner was changed to say 'A Parker Trading Game'. This was used from 1937 into the 1950's. All of the NEW EDITION games show the dual patent with LONDON on the label.

Described below is the hard to find NEW EDITION Monopoly game from early 1936 with the brown box and board. Estimates put the number of the brown box and board games produced as low as 1,000 units and as high as 25,000 units, approximately equal to the earlier game with Trade Mark on the label.

It doesn’t show up very often on Ebay, but when it does, bidding can be quite heated if properly described (most are not!). About 1 brown NEW EDITION game box shows up on Ebay for every 20 black box versions. The brown boards seem to be even scarcer than that, with only 1 or 2 a year showing up. Cool!
